Carol’s Daddy knew where his daughter was, and sometimes drove most of the day to get there. He would park his truck at the end of the long dirt road, then creep through the trees to stare at the crumbling house that his flesh and blood, his property by law, called home. He had figured it out three years ago from something a stranger said at the card table.

His plan was to enter one night when there was no moon. Grab her and the child—use a gun if anyone got in his way. It was his right. They belonged to him after all. Since finding out, he’d done nothing but watch the house a couple of times a month. Just knowing where she was and that he could do something at any time gave him a feeling of immense power that was hard to give up.

Swigging liquor from a square bottle, he would squat in the bushes watching lights go on and off, hearing voices, sometimes laughter, which he felt was enjoyed at his expense.

He’d usually finish the bottle in his truck, fall asleep until dawn, then begin the long journey home with the windows rolled down.
